Forward Sister Joan's biography to a friend.

A year and a half later, her mother remarried and found herself in a union that proved to be grim and demanding. Years later when Joan asked her mother why she married her stepfather in the first place, her mother said that she did so to give Joan a home.

“There was nothing else a woman could do,” her mother said. This was an answer that shaped Joan’s life.
